A reminder for the BOM – Weather is not climate

The Australian Annual Climate Statement 2023 was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) recently. It includes information on temperatures, rainfall, water, oceans, sea ice, and significant weather events in 2023.

What is climate?

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a 30-year period is used to determine the climate in a particular location. WMO climatological normals are 30-year averages. And the BOM states that, “A minimum 30 years of data is required to form a robust climatological average, accounting for decadal variability”.

So climate is defined as the average weather that occurs over a 30-year period. This means that climate change is the difference between the weather in one 30-year period compared to the weather in another 30-year period. For example, the average global climate change over 90 years (1900-29 to 1990-19) was estimated to be about 0.76 deg C, which is insignificant! That’s why the WMO don’t report it!

Deception

The BOM climate 2023 statement compares the annual weather in 2023 with the average weather in 1961-1990. But there is no climate data for after 1990! Like the WMO climate report, it claims to be a climate report, but it doesn’t include any recent climate data!  And there are no comparisons between the weather in one 30-year period compared to another 30-year period – the report doesn’t address climate change.

So the title of the report is deceptive. I would expect it to contain climate data that includes 2023. But the most recent climate data in the report is for 33-63 years earlier (1961-90)!

The report compares the weather in 2023 with the climate in 1961-1990. Like the WMO they are confusing weather with climate, which is deception of the general public.

It’s like a report on apples that compares recent data on oranges with 50-year old data on apples and then makes a conclusion about recent data on apples!

This is not reliable science. It’s more like biased propaganda. If they can’t get the fundamentals right, how much have they “massaged” the data for their narrative?

Conclusion

As I have mentioned before, the data in this report (and in most others by government and global organizations) are not measurements of climate change at all. They show weather changes, and not climate changes.

This means that the BOM is exploiting the ignorance of the public and raising un-necessary alarm.

If the BOM wants to talk about climate change it should use measurements of the climate. The fact that they don’t do this, makes me think that the evidence for a human influence on global warming is weak. But many people are gullible to this brainwashing through the media.
