Are all sins equal?

Roman Catholic doctrine distinguishes two categories of sins, venial and mortal. A venial sin is a slight fault that does not break friendship with God, although it weakens it. On the other hand, a mortal sin is a serious transgression that completely separates the person from God’s grace.
